In a vibrant celebration of fitness, resilience, and community spirit, 56 elderly women gathered at Kivubuka Primary School Grounds on October 1, 2025, for a unique cricket tournament dedicated to combating hypertension. The event brought together participants aged 50 and above, many of whom are managing age-related health risks and were eager to engage in meaningful physical activity.
Four dynamic teams—Kusasira, Hope, Kivubuka, and Faith—competed in a series of friendly matches that emphasized teamwork, coordination, and endurance. Beyond the excitement of the game, the tournament served as an empowering platform where elderly women demonstrated that age is no barrier to staying active, learning new skills, and participating in sports traditionally dominated by younger athletes.
Organizers highlighted that regular physical activity can play a crucial role in preventing and managing lifestyle diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. The tournament also provided an opportunity for participants to receive health education, interact socially, and build confidence, improving both physical and mental well-being.
This initiative continues to shine a spotlight on the importance of inclusive sports programs for older adults in Uganda. By encouraging active aging, the tournament not only promotes healthier communities but also challenges stereotypes about aging and gender in sports, proving that elderly women can lead, compete, and inspire through the power of sport.
